Wondering why there were cougar or gator heads popping up everywhere? Wondering why an alligator was in your classroom? Coronado held a school-wide fundraiser called Gator-Raid, hosted by the sophomore student council class. The Gator-Raid fundraiser raised money for the Shade Tree Women’s Shelter from January 30 to February 4.

An inflatable alligator was placed in classrooms along with a Gatorade can to collect money. This charity fundraiser was transformed into a competition. The goal was for each class with a gator infiltrator to raise $20 by sixth period of that day. Classes that succeeded received a cougar head on their door. Classes that raised less than $20 got a gator head instead.

These classes that raised over $30 got to choose where the gator would go next.

“It’s really creative, and the competition aspect of it makes it a little more fun. It’s different from the other fundraisers we’ve had,” Suhani Parikh, sophomore, said.

All proceeds went to Shade Tree, a shelter for abused or homeless women and children in crisis. Shade Tree offers programs to promote stability, dignity, and independence for the women staying in their care. All services are free of charge to it’s temporary residences.

Chemistry teacher, Mr. Parris raised over $200 in one day, around $82 in his sixth period alone, earning him a decorated trophy.
