The women’s basketball team played Canyon Springs at Canyon Springs for the first round of play-offs on February 18; they kept the lead throughout the entire game. Before being taken out with an elbow injury two minutes into the game, co-captain Alex Snoblen, senior, scored two points. The ball transitioned throughout the half with a 38-29 score at halftime.

“I was so hyped at half; there was no doubt that we could win this,” Renee Miri, senior, said.

After the half, the team kept the lead. With 6:54 left in the 4th quarter, co-captain Skylar Feldman, senior, fouled out after scoring 8 points, putting Samantha Green, junior, into the game. Green then scored 2 points. A few seconds later, Kayla Watterson, junior, after scoring 7 points fouled out as well, putting Jolie Ross, senior, into the game with 5:45 left in play.

The final shot of the game was a short-range jump shot by Ross putting the Cougars up by nine with 30 seconds left in the game. The top scorer of the game was co-captain Dajah Washington, junior, with 21 points, followed by Grace Green, senior, with 18 points, and Karlie Thorn, junior, with 17 points. The Cougars won the game with the final score of 77-68.

“I was mind blown that we beat out the number one ranked team in our division since when we came into the game, we were predicted to lose,” Feldman said.

After the game, a fight broke out in the locker room between Coronado and Canyon Springs. The brawl left two players from Coronado going to the hospital for further examination. Seven other Cougars were injured and tended to at the school.

The girls play Foothill on Thursday, Feb 20, at Green Valley High School at 6:20 p.m.
