In a night of twirling flags and swords, Color Guard came in first place at the Basic High School competition on Thursday, Feb. 30.

As their first competition in the indoor color guard season began, ‘Machine’ by Regina Spektor filled the Basic gym as a multitude of flags and swords spun, flipped, and waved through the air in time to the music.

“I think we did the best we could with all the nerves and with it being the first competition,” Alex Pitts, junior, said.

With only a couple of drops during the performance, Coronado took home first place.

“We practice every Tuesday from 3-6p.m. and sometimes on Saturdays. I think it paid off very much because we work very hard and put a lot of passion and power into what we do. We definitely see the results after we perform. You can tell how hard we worked,” Haily Williams, junior, said.

Their next competition will take place on March 6 at Durango High School.
