The Cougar’s baseball team is starting the year off with some impeccable offense. During their first game of the year, the Cougars managed to shutout the Legacy Longhorns.

The first run was scored by #4, junior Jacen Yergensen, after coming in to pinch run for #23, junior Nate Ruiz, who walked onto base after a 3-2 count in the second inning.

Most of the team’s runs were scored in the third inning making it a score of 6-0 going into the top of the fourth.

After the end of the fifth inning, the Cougars took out their starting pitcher #50, sophomore Adam Garcia, after having six strikeouts within the game, and put in their closer #25, junior Dakota Humphries.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars scored two more runs after #6, senior Tanner Bellamy, received a double then ran to third off a wild pitch. Bellamy was sent to home after the pitcher received his second warning for the type of pitches he was throwing.

The final run of the game was by Yergensen. With Yergensen on base and #13, senior Jackson Cofer, up to bat. Cofer hit a double sending Yergensen running around the bases into home where he scored the final run of the game.

The Cougars beat out Legacy with the final score of 8-0. Garcia will pick-up the win and Humphries gets the save.

“It feels really good to win the first game of the year. It kind of calms the first game jitters for us and helps the younger kids ease into the varsity experience a lot better,” Cofer said.

The Cougars continue in the tournament throughout the weekend and will be playing Faith Lutheran on Friday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m.
