The weekend of a high school student typically includes sleeping in, watching television, ordering some pizza, and hanging out with friends.

This past weekend, on May 2 and 3, some of the special needs students were doing just the opposite, participating in the Special Olympics one day and attending Coronado’s Best Buddies Prom the very next. Our special-needs peers had an eventful weekend.

Special Olympics is a worldwide organization that offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities the chance to compete against one another. The Olympic Games feature sports such as basketball, softball, swimming, kayaking, skiing, and more.

Coronado traveled to Cheyenne High School on Friday, May 2, to compete in the twelfth annual Nevada School Games. This track and field competition included events such as long jump, shot put and relay events.

“I loved being with my friends all day at the Special Olympics. Running was my favorite event,” Caroline Teixeira, sophomore, said.

The Olympics had around 800 middle and high school students from all around Clark county participating.

Best Buddies Prom was held in Coronado’s gymnasium on May 3, from 5-8 p.m. Tickets were sold at the door for $10.

CCSD students danced and ate Buon Gusto Italian food. A fun accent to the prom was the photo booth, which allowed students to capture the memories of the night.

“I had a lot of fun setting up and attending the Best Buddies prom. I really enjoyed being able to spend time and dance with all of the buddies from Coronado and the other schools, too,” Janet Lucero, sophomore, peer buddy, said.

Best Buddies Prom of Southern Nevada has been held at Coronado for four years in a row.
