In the last home game of the regular season, the varsity football team shut out the Basic Wolves on Thursday, Oct. 30, with a score of 30-0 clinching their first place playoff spot and home field advantage.

The Cougar defense played strong, not allowing the Wolves to score. The team moved up to the second ranked defense in the state, right behind Bishop Gorman. Cougar offense also destroyed Basic’s defense.

Spencer Cofer, junior, scored first with a 26 yard field goal in the first quarter.

Later in the first quarter, Justin Belknap, senior, received the ball and ran it in for the first touchdown making the score 10-0.

“Against Basic, we went out onto the field feeling comfortable. We had a good week at practice, did what we needed to do, came out on Thursday night, and shut out a well coached Basic team. Now, we are thinking about how to beat Silverado. New year, new team, one dream,” Kieren Henness, senior, said.

Henness scored on a punt return from the 10 yard line during the beginning of the second quarter, pushing the score to 17-0.

Travis Bowman, junior, received a 24 yard pass and ran it in for a touchdown giving the Cougars a 24 point lead of the scoreless Wolves.

“I felt like we came in the game strongly believing we were going to win. We were fired up from losing to them last year, and we knew winning this game would clinch home field playoff games,” Jordan Patterson, junior, said.

Patterson brought the team from the Cougars’ 20-yard line to a touchdown with multiple runs and multiple players fighting to take him down. He scored on a run at Basic’s one yard line for a touchdown leaving the score at 30-0.
