Coronado’s men’s varsity basketball defeated Basic 79-54 at home on Friday, Jan. 9.

Nick Kornieck, junior, was the first to score putting the Cougars in the lead.

Braden Vanalfen, senior, rebounded the ball off of a Basic foul shot and then scored, leaving the first quarter with a tie game at 12.

Basic fouled several times and Jake DesJardins, junior, and Trey Hurlburt, sophomore, made free throws to lead the Wolves 30-19 at the half.

“We played very well as a team and knocked down all of our free throws,” DesJardins said.

In the third quarter Kornieck was outnumbered and injured when he took a knee to his head. The game was delayed while he received medical attention on the court.

“Luckily we were up a pretty good amount, but we needed him to recover and get back on the court,” DesJardins said.

The Cougars kept the lead at the end of the third quarter, leading the Wolves 57-35.

Coronado finished the game strong and came out with a victory over Basic 79-54.

“We were able to stop the other team from scoring,” DesJardins said.

DesJardins and Kornieck led the team in points with DesJardins scoring 18 and Kornieck with 17.
