Lady Cougs hit home run

The varsity softball team defeated Liberty at home 10-0 on Monday, March 16.

Sarah Pinkston, junior took the mound at the start and kept Liberty scoreless in the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, Tatum Spangler, freshman, walked. Dylan Underwood, sophomore, bunted for a single and stole second base. Spangler came home making the score 1-0. Basia Query, junior, hit a single bringing Underwood home and making the score 2-0. Pinkston was hit by a pitch and walked. Jillian James, sophomore, hit, but Liberty was quick to catch the flyball while Pinkston took second base. Erica Hardy, sophomore, hit a single bringing Pinkston home, extending the Cougars lead to 4-0.

“I really feel like we worked together as a team today. The games we win make us better as a team,” Sophia McCann, sophomore, said.

During the second inning, Brooke Younie, junior, hit a single. Next up, Alexis Okamura, sophomore, got a base hit to bring Younie home increasing the lead to 5-0. Spangler hit a double to come home, making the score 6-0.

In the third inning, both the Cougars and the Patriots failed to make a move.

Younie scored off a single by Marissa Kopp, sophomore, in the bottom of the fourth taking the score to 7-0.

No runs were scored in the fifth inning.

At the top of the sixth inning, Liberty tried to fight back, but went down one, two, three.

Jodi Allen, junior, lead off in the bottom of the sixth and was out at first. Celia Blome, junior, and Underwood both hit singles. Query batted after Underwood hit a single, bringing Underwood to second base. All came home after Pinkston’s walk off resulting in a 10-0 win.

“We played wonderful, we had great intensity and energy on and off the field. Our next game will be in Torrence, California. We’ll be there on Thursday and stay until Saturday,” Query said.
