The women’s varsity soccer team added to their win column after defeating Basic 6-1 at home on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Basic scored the first goal 12 minutes into the first half of the game.

Shortly after, Olivia Meza, junior, scored Coronado’s first goal, to tie it up.

“It was the best feeling in the world when I scored. I knew I was helping out the team, and it felt awesome,” Meza said.

Coronado’s defensive line played a strong first half, keeping the ball away from Basic.

Early in the second half, Ariann Sanford, junior, took a shot which deflected off the goal post. She chased the ball, took another shot, and scored, giving the Cougs a 2-1 lead.

After Basic took a penalty kick, both sides battled it out for the ball, but Trinity Rhoades, junior, won out and scored against Basic to make it 3-1.

Sanford tried to extend the lead with her aggressive corner kicks, but Basic’s defensive team blocked all attempts.

Carli Young, senior, scored two consecutive goals against Basic, making the score 5-1.

After the refs called a penalty on Coronado, Basic was allowed a penalty kick, and although the shot was close, it bounced off the goal post.

In the final minutes of the game, Kylie Westbrooke, sophomore, scored the last goal making the final score 6-1.

“I thought we played well. We started off slow, but in the second half we made our comeback. I was so happy when I scored because I knew I was helping out my team, and my friends and family were there to watch me,” Westbrooke said.

The girls play Eldorado tonight at Eldorado. They head into the game second in the Sunrise Division behind Green Valley at 6-1-2.
