The future is a mystery, something that no one can truly predict, yet through the years there have been people in the entertainment world who have directly predicted things that actually came true.

Science Fiction writers are known for making far-fetched predictions about the future, but H.G. Wells’ warship prediction seemed too out there. In his 1903 story, “The Land Ironclads,” he described an extreme metal-hulled warship put on land. It was described as 100 feet long, rolling on eight pairs of wheels, and had a turning tower in the top to let the captain survey the scene. These fictional machines were nothing like the machines Americans were used to in 1916. So when the first tanks were deployed onto the battlefield, they were seen as the realistic version of Wells’ fictional idea. It may have been completely made up, but the same machine Wells had dreamt was traveling across countries just 13 years later.

In the “Back to the Future” movie franchise, the creators predicted many possibilities about the future during the adventure in the film. During Marty and Doc’s travels, they discover what the future is like with its various new inventions. The creators predicted some now legitimate devices such as handheld tablets, video conferencing, auto lacing shoe laces, and the obsession with personal electronics when Marty and the Doc went to Oct. 21, 2015. While not all of their predictions came true, they were still reasonably accurate with the handful that did come true.

“Smart phones are the best invention that they got right because they completely changed the world,” Anthony Phillippe, junior, said.

The adult cartoon show “The Simpsons” has aired various speculations about the future over the years, but recently a 15-year-old prediction has come true. Donald Trump is currently in the running for the presidency. In the episode “Bart to the Future,” Bart is given a look into the future 2030 where Trump is the president who damaged the country and is stepping down from office. While it is still unclear if Trump will be president, it is a clear prediction on the creator’s part for coming up with the idea, that could now come true.

“I’m not opposed to Trump running for president. If he can get the job done, I’m totally down with that,” Beau Edwards, senior, said. “It’s a crazy coincidence that “The Simpsons” predicted Trump running, but maybe “The Simpsons” have it all figured out.”

The future is difficult to predict, but apparently the entertainment business has the inside scoop on unknown information.
