Lady Cougars defeat the Falcons

The girl’s basketball team battled against Foothill on Friday, Jan. 22. The Cougars triumphed 52-44.

The Cougs won the tip off, while each team struggled to keep the lead. Sophomore Aeryn Hawkins made the first basket of the game, but the Falcons fought back, and the game was soon tied. The back-and-forth continued until the end of the first quarter, with the score 13-13.

The Cougars had possession of the ball at the beginning of the second quarter. Coronado made the first basket with Ksana Montoya, sophomore, at the free throw line. The Falcons controlled the tempo of the first half, but maintained only a slight, one-point lead 25-24 at the half.

The second half began with at Falcons’ possession, but Captain Haley Tyrell, sophomore, stole the ball, successfully completing a layup for the first basket of the third quarter. The Cougars managed to take the lead during the third quarter to make it 37-32.

Montoya scored the last two points from the Cougars’ free point line. Coronado missed two free throws after Foothill made an intentional foul. The Falcons scored one more time to make the final score 52-44.

“We’re a very young team. We have no seniors. We have one returning player and no returning starters. It’s been our hope all year that we are just going to get better and better, so this win gives us a lot of confidence as the fourth ranking team in the city,” Coach Santigate said.
