The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition initiative for creative teens, took place Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Springs Preserve.

There were 1,250 submissions in total from across the nation, 250 in writing and 999 in art. 11 Coronado students earned awards in art and writing.

“I found out [I won an award] on January 12 right after school through email. I immediately freaked out and called my friends, Lindsay and Ariana,” Trent Lomprey, senior, said.

Lomprey received the Gold Key for Shifting Sand, and an Honorable Mention for Inhaling Shadows.

The contest allowed each student to enter photography, writing, or sculptures for a chance to win scholarship money, be published, and be recognized across the nation.

In 2015, according to artandwriting.org, over 300,000 pieces were entered by students in seventh to twelfth grade, 68,000 pieces were awarded, and 2,000 pieces were exhibited at Carnegie Hall.

The deadline to submit was Sep. 16, 2015. Students can participate in the 2017 Scholatic Awards by going to artandwriting.org and creating an account to submit their work.
