Although they started out strong and held the lead until the sixth inning, the varsity softball team lost 5-3 in a challenging game at home against Rancho on Monday, April 11.

The game began with pitcher Ashley Ward, freshman, striking out the first Rancho batter. Rancho failed to get any hits in the first inning. Batting second, Ward hit a home run, bringing in a run to make it 1-0 at the bottom of the first.

The score remained 1-0 after the second and third innings.

“I feel like we could honestly be doing better this season. I feel that we really do have the potential to go far; we just have to put it all together,” Brooke Younie, senior, said.

Rancho began to catch up during the fourth inning, making it 1 all. One Rancho player stole home, earning them their first run of the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Jaiden Johnson, senior, earned the Cougars another run. The Cougars ended the fourth inning in the lead 2-1.

There was no score change in the fifth inning.

Rancho scored in the top of the sixth with four runs. After Rancho took the field, Ward scored a final run, bringing the score to 5-3.

The Cougars did not score another run in the seventh. The game ended 5-3 with Rancho on top.

“If I could change anything about today’s game, I would have changed our mentality. We could have cheered harder and kept a tougher mindset than we did,” Elena said.
