Women’s golf won their third state title at the 2016 NIAA Class 4A Girls State Championship on Oct. 17 and 18 at Eagle Valley Golf Club in Carson City.

“I just focus on my process and each shot on the course, and I mainly focused on my short game to prepare for state,” Gabby Denunizo, junior, said.

Out on the greens, the ladies strove to hit the perfect drive. During the first round Victoria Estrada, sophomore, scored 75, and Crystal Querlor, sophomore, scored 82. The competition was intense; the upperclassman worked to continue the winning streak. Denunizo scored 80, and Sami Penor, junior, scored 81. To end the first round, Ashley Lung, senior, scored 81, and Kylie Keyer, senior, scored 88. Their total after round one was 317.

“I think my most memorable experience was standing there with my teammates as he announced us as the state champions and the hour of pictures that came afterwards,” Keyer said.

Led by Coach Sawaia, the ladies conquered the final round with great triumph. Top scores included 71 by Estrada, and 70 by Lung. Both Keyer and Querol scored 87. The round ended with Penor scoring 76 and Denunzio scoring 81. The score to conclude round two was 298, making the score of their third state title 615.

“I am actually really heartbroken that season is already over, and I won’t be seeing these girls as much anymore. I’m extremely sad because this season was honestly my favorite. I know I have two more years to go, but I know there won’t be a team as close and amazing as this season,” Querol said.
