Above anything else, fashion is about self expression. Who’s to say what people can and can’t wear? “Fashion fails” are overrated and not reasonable; anything can be made into fashion. A spin on the classic “fashion no no’s” is long overdue. Whether it’s classified as a “never wear” or “hot trend,” people should wear whatever they like because the clothes presented on the body are an expression of yourself.

It’s a classic faux pas to wear denim on denim, but now denim is bigger than ever. Take inspiration from the iconic joutfits worn by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the American Music Awards in 2001. The key to styling denim on denim is keeping the wash cohesive through clothing items. Pair a denim jacket with jeans for a classic look that still defies the so called “laws of fashion.”

A fabric is never enough to stop fashion. A stand out outfit can be made from different fabrics with a plaid flannel and striped shirt, and these items happen to be in just about everyone’s closet. Contrary to prior beliefs, mixing prints does not always look wacky or mismatched, but can make for a chic everyday outfit with a bit of interest.

Color is an important aspect of clothing, but it shouldn’t stop someone from wearing what they desire. Black and navy are “supposedly” not allowed to be worn together, but a combination between these two deep shades can make for a sophisticated outfit. Black pants and a navy top can be paired for a classy look without too much effort. In addition, the “no white after labor day” rule is worn out and frankly illogical. White can be paired with anything at ANY time of the year. In fact, white can be a delightful color for winter to complement the snowy season.

Fashion has no clear-cut style rules. Feel free to mix metals and experiment with accessories. There is no such thing as too many accessories, and they can be perfect to spice up an outfit and add interest. Layered necklaces and a belt is not too much, and can give an outfit the perfect amount of boho spice. Mixing metals doesn’t have to look tacky or unorganized, and layering on accessories, no matter the metal, can always make an outfit look more complete.

Older people often mistake ripped clothing with a homeless person’s ensemble, but these items do not always make someone look messy and unkempt. The rips add edginess to an outfit. Defy the stereotype by pairing ripped jeans with anything or wear a ripped sweatshirt to create a Kanye-inspired outfit . Opposite to the ideas of the past, oversized clothing is not frumpy or unflattering and can make for comfortable outfits. An oversized sweater is a go to in everyone’s closet, and oversized clothing is most definitely not a fashion sin. Everyone from Emily Ratajkowski to Kim Kardashian has been spotted wearing oversized sweaters and jackets

Don’t be afraid to to defy fashion rules, no matter personal style. Anything can be worn as long as it’s paired with confidence. Break the long established fashion rules once and for all.
