The news website, “The Roar,” earned a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, for their work on last year’s website.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association allows schools to enter print or online newspapers to be critiqued by experienced judges. Websites can receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal.

“I am so proud of our staff last year. We worked very hard to earn the awards we did. The countless hours we spent writing and revising all paid off,” Entertainment Editor Lexi Lane, junior, said.

The association also has crown awards they can give to student work. The crown awards are the highest award a student can receive. Gold and silver crowns are given out, and there’s not a set number of crowns which have to be handed out.

“We have a really strong staff, and a lot of great new writers. I feel like we can push ourselves to get to the highest level possible this year,” Co-Editor-in-Chief McKenna Cooley, senior, said.

This year, “The Roar” will submit their website to CSPA and the “Las Vegas Review Journal” which judges their own high school journalism awards. Last year, the website earned first place website from the Review Journal. The staff hopes to win big once again.

“This is my first year on staff, and I am already looking forward to winning more awards at RJ [“Review Journal”] and from Columbia,” Joshua Christensen, freshman, said.
