Three overflowing trucks with everything from clothes to water bottles left campus for Houston, Texas on Sunday morning, Sept. 17. In addition, the student body, other schools, and local companies also donated a total of $7,700 to Northside High School.

“The drive started off small and turned into something huge, bigger than we ever expected. It was overwhelmingly exciting. I’ve never been a part of something that was so awesome. It’s not just our school or student council got involved, everyone in our community got involved,” Student Body Secretary Savanna Winterton, senior, said.

Coronado received checks from Zappos for $5,000 and Greenspun M.S. for $700. Mr. Manning’s class donated all proceeds from their most recent cookie sales, and Student Council donated the proceeds from Friday’s Canes sales.

After hearing the damage Hurricane Harvey caused to Northside HS in Houston, StuCo urged clubs and classes to donate during a drive held from Tuesday, Sept. 5 to Tuesday, Sept. 12.  StuCo pushed clubs and classes to donate. The drive took care of the physical needs, and Cougars for Change asked English classes to write letters for the students of Northside to help take care of the emotional needs. The efforts were featured on news engines such as Fox 5 News and Channel 6 News as well as 98.5 KLUC.

“Many of the students and their families lost everything. Many of them had been wearing the same socks, shoes, and clothes from when the hurricane first hit,” Student Body Historian Haley Tyrell, senior, said.

StuCo reached out to surrounding schools for additional help: Glen C. Taylor E.S., Wallin E.S., Lamping E.S., Bob Miller M.S., and Greenspun M.S. Lake Las Vegas also ran a drive on Sept. 9 and donated all proceeds in an effort to combine forces and help Northside as much as possible.

Members of both student council and cheer volunteered at Lake Las Vegas’s drive to help gather donations.

“I donated money to help reimburse the victims deprived by the hurricane. Even though it did not occur here, it affected all of us, and that’s why it is important to donate and help out as much as possible,” Charlie Dreitzer, junior, said.
