Dominating the region with an undefeated 15-0 season, the women’s varsity tennis team stormed to state, beating the Gorman Gaels in the finals 12-6 on Oct. 21.

“I knew our girls could do it from the start. Not only have I appreciated and loved my last four years on the team, I get to end it with a state championship title,” Hannah Grossman, senior, said.

In the first round, the Cougars swept the Gaels with a 6-0 lead. After the second round, Coach David Willingham had the entire roster play so as to contribute to the state win.

“As a sophomore, being able to contribute to such a monumental accomplishment is amazing, knowing that I actually added to this win makes it all the better,” Lea Abdoulah, sophomore, said.

Although, they have came close attaining state runner-up titles in the past, this is the first state championship the Cougars have won since 2003.

In individuals, Hannah Grossman, senior, won fourth place in the state championship. Megan King, sophomore, and Sidra Wohlwend, freshman, attained second place in the doubles section of the championship falling to the Palo Verde Panthers in the finals.
