Varsity Football

Coronado varsity football took on the Sierra Vista Mountain Lions. With the student section filled up, dressed in all black, and ready to watch the Cougars kick off the game with the Mountain Lions receiving the kickoff and attempting to get through the Cougars strong defense.

With Coronado in red and Sierra Vista in white, the Cougars had the first kickoff. With a kick that soared through the air and landed at the 30-yard line that is where Sierra Vista started their attack. Attempting to break through our defense, Sierra Vista tried to make multiple runs and realized that was not going to work. Instead of running it on their third down, Sierra Vista threw the ball and completed it for a first down.

“Thursday Night Lights are always a special moment for the Coronado Cougars.” said junior Jeremiah Kunitake “Senior night only adds to the atmosphere of that. Watching all of my peers take that walk onto the field accompanied by their parents and loved ones is a surreal feeling of pride in our program. It is a dedicated night to those who have given their all for nearly 4 years in this program. To be able to come away with the landslide win over Sierra Vista, was a feeling that I’ll always remember. To highlight two of my peers; Logan Cheney with two interceptions on the night and Jalen Garrison who balled out and by the end of the night was holding above his head a MVP trophy and an undefeated division championship. The first of its kind. History was made, records were broken truly no other night like it.”

The Thursday night lights game was an exciting night for the Cougars with the cougars taking the win against the Mountain Lions the final score being 34-6. As it was senior night for the team along with cheer, dance, and marching band. For their senior night celebration seniors were walked out on the field joined by either a parent or friend as their name is announced by the game announcer along with the college they plan to attend and what they plan to study. After the seniors were celebrated for all of their accomplishments the JROTC had a military appreciation night.

“The Thursday night lights game was memorable and exciting, watching my fellow senior players play their last senior night game and being there to watch them perform and play their hearts out.” said junior Brady Kennedy “It was also enjoyable winning and now being able to make the playoffs.”

Catch your Cougars at their playoff game on November 5th on Coronado Field at 6 pm. The opposing team is to be determined.

Varsity Volleyball

Last week our lady Cougars were able to win both their games. Both the Foothill Falcons and the Green Valley Gators have nothing on us.

On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the cougars played an away game against the Foothill Falcons. We lost the first two sets but were able to come back and win the other three. This was truly a nail-biter of a game and could’ve gone either way. It was exciting to see the girls persevere and finish it. The final score was 3-2.

“If it wasn’t for the bond we have as a team I don’t think we would have won today,” sophomore Erin Barton “I’m so glad that I am able to trust everyone on my team to get the job done.”

On Thursday, Oct. 21, the Cougars played another away game against Green Valley. The team was able to sweep the gators 3-0. This win helped the lady Cougars become in second place in the 5A South division. They are currently on a 4 win streak and hope to continue that at their game on Monday, Oct. 25, against the Durango trailer blazers.

“I’m grateful to have a team that loves this sport just as much as I do,” senior Ashli Dean said. “We’ve improved so much since the beginning of the season. I’m so proud of us and how far we’ve come.”

Men’s Soccer

By Emma Barton

This week the Coronado’s men soccer team had two amazing victories. Both games were away games, and our team did an outstanding job conquering the competition. Both the Rancho Rams and the Spring Valley Grizzlies were no match for our boys.

On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the men’s soccer team swept the Spring Valley Grizzlies in a 8-0 win. This was their fifth away game and eleventh game of the season. Captain DJ Kiernan was determined to lead his team to victory and keep their fourth place ranking in the 5A division. With DJ’s leadership and the team’s trust in one another the boys were able to win this game.

“Going into this game we knew it was going to be an easy win,” sophomore John Vento said “I’m glad the team was able to come together and play as if we were playing the best team this evening.”

On Thursday, Oct. 21, the men’s soccer team killed Rancho with an 8 to nothing win keeping their streak of winning 6 games in a row. The team was able to play as one and defeat the competition.

“The hardest part of playing teams that aren’t as good as you is that you tend to get lazy and stoop down to the competition level,” senior Collin Anderson said. “Laziness is something we need to work on as a team.”

Come see the next men’s soccer game on Monday, Oct. 25 at home playing the SECTA roadrunners.

Women’s Soccer

By Abbey Huffer

On October 18, Coronado’s women’s soccer team started off the week with an amazing win against Desert Oasis with a score of 2-0. Impressively, #10 on the field, Xayla Black, 11, scored the game opener with extreme speed down the wing.

“DO was a great game. We won and we had possession most of the game, but we struggled with connecting simple passes sometimes,” junior Xayla Black said.“Overall, the team has been playing very well together, and we have very good team chemistry.”

On October 20, Coronado’s women’s soccer team struck another win against Shadow Ridge with a score of 3-1. The midfield really supported the forwards in scoring their goals which played a big role in their win.

“I think the highlight of the night was maybe our second goal,” sophomore Kerrigyn Lynam said. “It was from a throw-in and was finished outside the 18-yard box top left corner.”

On October 22, Coronado’s women’s soccer team ended the week with another win with a score of 4-1 against Las Vegas high school. Amazingly, lots of goals were scored from crosses into the middle.

“I think that we could improve on our mindset going into games,” sophomore Elle Bachhuber said.
