Women’s Varsity Soccer

While several rough games were being played throughout last week, on Thursday, September 29th at 4:30 pm Coronado’s varsity soccer team fought hard and true at home against Centennial High School with a final score of 8-0.

The team was primed for the game that day as they had great possession the entire time, Centennial barely managing to snag the ball. Determination was strong with the team as they held tightly onto their lead in both halves.

“Honestly, the team this year is a lot more together.” junior Elle Bachhuber said. “We’ve been working really well as a unit. We spend a lot more time doing team bonding and it really shows up on the field.”

This teamwork was clear that night as goal after goal was made, including 2 assists given to senior Xayla Black, both of which she managed to score. Along with that was a swift top shelf goal from senior Milan Cordone off a free kick, keeping the Coronado spirit high.

“We’re working on a new formation and Thursday was the perfect opportunity to connect with each other and get on the attack.” senior Daphne Egelhoff said. “Our results spoke for themselves.”

Results are what they got, managing a mercy rule that ended it all 20 minutes early. The game came to a close with a devastating score of 8 to 0 as the Coronado varsity soccer team snatched another huge win.

There’ll be another chance to come support and witness another strong game from the Cougars this Thursday, October 6th against Green Valley at 4:30 pm.

Varsity Football

On Friday, September 30th, the Coronado Cougars (5-1) travel across the city and come home victorious after their 41-0 win against the Mojave Rattlers (2-4).

“We kind of had a messy game, I mean overall we won, and a lot of people did play good, but there were a lot of fumbles,” junior Jake Sheerin (#72, Punter) said. “We didn’t really take this game as seriously as we could.”

In this epic match-up, Coronado’s defense was on point with multiple sacks, interceptions, and fumble recoveries. The Cougars had three sacks, 1.5 by senior Davion Martinez (#99), 1 by junior Matthew Hunt (#34), and 0.5 by senior Silas Sagote (#1). Two interceptions, one by junior Ricky Edwards (#21), and one by senior Jeremiah Kunitake (#22). Two fumble recoveries, one by junior Matthew Hunt (#34) returned for a 77-yard touchdown, and one by Silas Sagote (#1) for a 97-yard touchdown. The offense also came to play with sophomore Aiden Krause (#10) having a total of 151 passing yards, and the team having a total of 159 receiving and 86 rushing yards.

“Our next game against Shadow Ridge (6-1) is going to be a lot harder,” said Sheerin. “We’ve been prepping to take them on a lot because we know they’re a good team. I didn’t play during Mohave because we didn’t need to punt and if everything goes according to plan I won’t have to this game either.”

Make sure to watch Coronado’s next game against Shadow Ridge on Friday, 10/7 at 6:00 p.m. at Shadow Ridge.

Varsity Cross Country

by Addison Stanton

On Wednesday, September 28th, the Cross Country team took to the hills near SECTA in their meet against Foothill and SECTA. Coronado got the win with 15 points.

Out in the hilly desert, the Varsity Girl’s Cross-Country team ran hard and efficiently. Coronado Runners took up all the top 10 spots except for one with senior Athena McKinney in the lead. McKinney finished with a time of 13:16 and took first place with Ella Hone trailing her. Even though this meet was only two miles instead of three, the team still performed and finished with a score of 15 points overall.

“I think we did really well,” junior Hridi Bhakta said. “Everyone was cheering for everyone and we all supported each other.

With the Varsity boys running the same course, junior William Higgins was leading the pack of boys. Being only a junior, he took first place and finished with a time of 11:05, and senior Brayden Jones from Boulder City High School trailing him by 14 seconds. After a quick jaunt, the boys also ended up taking first place.

“We did really well,” senior Daniel Quinones said. “We ran to the best of our abilities and I thought we did well.”

The Cross Country team can be found running on September 30th in Huntington Beach, California at 8 am.

Cross country in Huntington Beach

by Madeline Vernaci

On Saturday, October 1st, Coronado’s Cross Country Team went to Huntington Beach, California to compete in the Huntington Beach Central Park Invitational. With both teams running at their best for their victory, the Women’s Varsity team scored 5th place overall and the Men’s Varsity team scored 8th.

“This meet was a 3 mile course with an extremely steep hill so my goal was just to break 20 minutes and hopefully medal,” sophomore Vera Lee said. “My results were way better than I had expected, almost breaking 19 minutes and coming out with a medal, with our team exceeding expectations by placing 5th overall in a very competitive race.”

Vera Lee placed 31st, just behind teammate Brooke-Lynn Miller in 29th, with the two highest Women’s scores for Coronado. On the Men’s side, the top two to finish were William Higgins in 10th place and Jackson Graham in 47th place. Despite the challenges runners had to face at this meet, everyone was able finish, and the team as a whole was able to do well.

“The trip is in the middle of the season, so we have all had time to improve a little and figure out the time we would like,” junior Ella Jacobson said. “Whenever we go out of town everyone tends to cut down their usual times by a lot. Even though there was this big hill, the excitement of being in California made a lot of runners get a personal record.”

Not yet a week after their last meet, Coronado’s Cross Country team will compete again in the Bud O’Dea 9-10th Classic at Desert Breeze Park at 3pm on Thursday, October 6.

Varsity Tennis

by Melissa Duarte

Two amazing victories made by the women and men’s varsity tennis team. Coronado High School tennis team brought it home, and both the women and men won against Centennial high school on September 28, 2022 . The women won their game 17-2 and the men won their game 16-2.

“I think the key moment in the game was definitely our first round,”  junior Natalie Petterson said. “It set us up for the rest of our match against Centennial.”

School spirit was strong because Coronado never allowed Centennial to have a chance to make themselves known on the scoreboard. From the beginning, Coronado took the lead, never losing momentum.

“I think it really boosted our belief that we could do really well against them and motivated everyone on the team to really do their best,” Petterson said.

Coronado High School tennis team’s regular season is coming to an end, and seems to be ending on a good racket. The Varsity Tennis teams did an amazing job at being fierce against Centennial. Regionals

The next game is Monday, October 3rd, 2022 at Coronado High School.
