On Wednesday, October 12, the Coronado Women’s Soccer team butted heads against the Desert Oasis Diamondbacks. After a long hard battle, the Cougars eventually pulled it together and produced a 2-1 win.

“The team’s chemistry is very good,” freshman Allison Kleiner said. “Everyone works well together and it really shows on the field.”

With the first kickoff going to Coronado, the defense possessed the ball well. However, a missed clearance allowed the Diamondbacks to get to the ball and finish the ball allowing an early lead of 0-1. Later in the half, senior Xayla Black narrowly missed a goal that would’ve tied the game. The halftime whistle was blown and a motivational pep talk by Coach Neel raised the team’s spirits.

“I think that the team performed very well together,” Kleiner said. “We worked so hard and showed a lot of fight to come back from 1-0 down.”

Although, the first 20 minutes of the second half remained rather calm. Right at the 20-minute mark, senior Xayla Black redeemed her missed chance and finished a shot in the back post. This tied the game 1-1 and gave the Cougars an immediate mental boost. While cutting it close on time, senior Trinity Buchanan made it past the defensive line and finished a 1v1 with the goalie giving Coronado the final 2-1 win.

You can find the Cougars scrapping it out with Las Vegas High School on Thursday, October 20th at Coronado at 4:30 pm.
