Down, Set, Hike! // Setting up their offensive play, the Cougars assume their positions for the first down. Following their early touchdown, the Cougars had to fight in order to maintain their lead; however, it was short lived after the Mustangs caught up to the Cougars by the end of the first quarter. The Coronado Cougars went into the game against Shadow Ridge ready to fight. After losing against the Mustangs early on in the season, the Cougars were prepared to redeem themselves and fight hard.

Once the whistle blew, the team knew what to do. Junior Paige (T) Baptista spotted the Mustang thrown ball high into the air. Grasping it, she ran it into a touchdown creating the first play of the game, a pick six, with a Cougar score of 6-0. Excitement and joy washed over the crowd and the Cougar players.

“It felt electric to catch the first ball of the game and to just set the overall mood for the game,” said Baptista.

While the game maintained its anxiety and pressure, the Cougars continued to fight. They continued to dominate on defense and started to figure the kinks out on offense. However, it just wasn’t enough to save the Cougars from another loss. With the Cougars straggling in the third and fourth quarters, they were unable to consume the strength they needed to win the game. They fought valiantly with passion and determination, but unfortunately came up a touchdown short. The game ended with a 12-19 Cougar loss.

“I think our coverage was good on defense and all the ideas and plays were there for offense, but we just need to work on keeping positive attitudes,” said T Baptista. “I think it was one of the best games we have played and we honestly could have won because we have all the talent.”

Our Coronado Cougars will review and fine tune their skills for a chance to beat Green Valley on Thursday, January 24 at 4:30 on the Gator’s home field.
