Men’s Varsity Basketball

The Coronado Men’s Varsity Basketball team took on Arbor View in an away game Thursday, January 26. Coronado brought their A-game and took it home with a score of 67-60.

Though the competition seemed to come with ease, the team recognizes it was only because of their hard work and perseverance they were able to secure the game. Winning doesn’t come easy in the world of basketball.

“We really came together and played as a unit,” said senior Ifiok Peters (#44). “We got some really good open shots and important rebounds. We also had really good defense on the rim. Overall, it was a big team win for us. We are really starting to work together.”

With success, there are always things to learn and ways to improve. That’s one lesson Coronado’s Varsity Basketball team knows very well.

“We can always benefit from improving defense on the perimeter and interior,” said Peters. “We also need to continue playing as a team and keeping that bond consistent.”

Wish the Coronado Varsity Basketball team luck as they travel to Anaheim, California, where they will participate in the Nike Extravaganza against Foothill.

Women’s Varsity Basketball

On Wednesday, January 25, Coronado’s Women’s Varsity Basketball team competed against Legacy High School. They sailed through for a win with a score of 53-39, gaining confidence and ready to face their next opponent.

“The game went pretty good, and I thought we played well as a team and moved the ball well to get open shots,” senior Kaylee Walters said. “I think I saw the floor well and helped contribute to my teammates’ scoring. I need to work on being more consistent with my shot attempts, and as a team we just have to work on communicating more on the court to help make each other’s jobs easier.”

Starting off strong, the Cougars were able to fend off their opposition well, and keep ahead until the end. The strong bond between teammates and their ability to work together certainly allowed them to prevail in their most recent challenge against Legacy, and prepare them for their next game on Friday.

“I think I did a good job assisting my teammates but I need to improve on my confidence and just taking more shots,” junior Sunny Li said. “I’ve also been trying to work on myself mentally, to talk to teammates or friends when needed and even trying things like meditation.”

The next women’s basketball game is an away game against Spring Valley High School on Friday, January 27 at 6:30 pm, and the next home game will be played on Wednesday, February 1 at 5 pm. Be sure to give your support to the Coronado Women’s Basketball team as they work hard to keep winning their games.
