Cougars eliminate Gators

Softball won in the first round of play-offs, beating the Green Valley Gators 10-6 on Tuesday, May 13.

 

In the bottom of the first inning, the first run of the game was hit by Brooke Younie, sophomore, with a groundout to shortstop allowing Jaiden Johnson, sophomore, to score.

 

During the bottom of the second, Johnson hit a triple allowing Dylan Underwood, freshman, to score, making it 2-0.

 

At the top of the third inning the Gators gained the lead as the Cougars battled the wind. Going into the bottom of the third inning the Gators led 6-2.

 

The Gators scored again during the top of the fourth, putting the Cougars down by four.

 

The girls came back in the bottom of the fourth. Underwood scored the first run of the inning after a wild throw to third. Younie sacrificed a hit to center, allowing Lauren Buck, senior, to score. Danielle Amato, senior, hit a double, allowing Johnson to score. The tying run was hit by Basia Query, sophomore, with a double to left, allowing pinch runner, Dymond Balderrama, sophomore, to score. Katie Dawson, senior, helped the Cougars to break the tie by hitting a single, allowing the other pinch runner, Erica Hardy, freshman, to score to let the Cougs pull ahead, 7-6. To end the inning, Nicole Hardy, senior, hit a double to left, sending Jillian James, freshman, and Dawson into score.

 

The Cougars scored one more run during the bottom of the fifth as Amato hit a single to shortstop, allowing Johnson to score.

 

The team ended the game with a throw out at first. This game was the last one these girls will play at The Cage, beating out our school rivals with a comeback, 10-6.

 

The second round of play-offs is Wednesday, May 14, at 3:30 p.m. at Rancho.
