Incoming students, along with their families, strolled the campus during the annual Freshman Barbecue on August 21 to get a feel for where they would be spending their next four years of high school.

While enjoying hot dogs and listening to pop music, students walked the halls familiarizing themselves with the campus. Lockers were assigned to those who had a parent or guardian present.

All along the quad, members of various clubs and sports gathered at tables, many offering free candy, pencils, and other goodies, in the hopes of luring incoming students to become part of their club or team. Some sold baked goods, shirts, and other merchandise to raise funds for the upcoming school year.

“I thought it was nice to see all of the clubs and sports that belong to Coronado, and I feel good about starting my first year of high school,” Andrea Yuen, freshman, said.

The band, cheerleaders, and dancers performed to- show incoming students the enthusiasm that Coronado has for the new school year.

“It was my second year performing in front of freshmen and the new faces who are going to be at Coronado. Their facial expressions when they watch the performances from our cheer and dance teams are motivating. When they see the major difference between middle school and high school, it reminds me of when I was their age going to a completely different school, meeting new people, getting involved in different clubs and activities, knowing you’re starting your future. And they’re the next generation,” varsity cheerleader Amanda Ludian, junior, said.

Hosted by Student Council, the barbecue welcoming new students and their families to the Cougar community has been a tradition since the school opened in 2001.
