The sports season, whether fall, winter, or spring, are full of competition and pressure. It’s obvious that you improve during the season, but the secret is that athletes are made in the off-season.

Like studying for a test, there needs to be some prep work before players go into training mode. In order to be a champion and true competitor, student athletes need to train for weeks, even months before the start of their season. Most sports have intramurals or workouts prior to the season and these are crucial to a student-athlete’s performance.

Training on a steady schedule will not only improve technique, but help increase stamina and strengthen the muscles necessary for more accuracy. Training generally happens in the off-season and before intramurals.

Intramurals are practices held by the coaches in charge of the teams and for a short time before the actual season begins. These prepare athletes for trials of try-outs. Coaches encourage anyone that expresses even mild interest in the sport to join them in intramurals and learn and train with the future teams.

Preparing for sports in the off-season is extremely important for all student-athletes in order to excel. Working out in a gym, personal training, and beginning to run is a good place to start.
