CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL
SPIRITLEADER CONSTITUTION


I. PURPOSE

The purpose of the spiritleader groups at Coronado High School is to
promote school spirit and unity among the students, staff, athletes,
and activity groups. Cheerleaders will also represent Coronado High
School by participating in community functions and by fostering
enthusiasm at sporting contests, assemblies, pep rallies, and other
school-related activities.

II. REQUIREMENTS

A. Currently have and maintain a 2.0 GPA at all times.
B. All spiritleaders must follow eligibility guidelines set forth in
this constitution and those set forth by Nevada Interscholastic
Activities Association (NIAA).
C. All spiritleaders must demonstrate leadership, good conduct, and a
positive attitude at all times.
D. All spiritleaders must follow CCSD dress code, both in and out of
uniform, at all times.
E. Spiritleading is a year-round activity. If a conflict arises
between
two school activities, the situation will be referred to administration

and the student may have to choose between the two activities.
F. Failure to meet any of the above requirements may result in
suspension or removal from the squad.

III. CODE OF CONDUCT

A. Members shall conduct themselves properly at all times.
B. All members shall promote good sportsmanship and school spirit
through cooperation with coaches, administrators, teachers, parents,
and students.
C. Conduct in the classroom and on campus should be of a caliber that
gives a good example to other students.
D. During a game, all members should be enthusiastic, well groomed,
and
in command of any situation that may arise.
E. “Booing” or negative comments are unacceptable behaviors at any

school events.
F. Inappropriate behavior such as, but not limited to: smoking,
drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or using improper language during your
term as a spiritleader may result in dismissal.
G. Members are NOT to discuss squad business outside of the group or
the coaches.

IV. PRACTICES

Practices will be scheduled and announced by the coaches. Occasionally,

extra practices may be called if the coaches deem them necessary.
Coaches and squad members will schedule summer practices before school
is dismissed for summer break.

A. ALL PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY.
B. Work or other activities are not an excuse to miss practice.
C. Proper clothing and footwear are required and no jewelry is allowed

on any part of the body.
D. Absences from practice may only be excused by contacting the coach
PRIOR to the practice.
E. Doctor or dentist appointments should be scheduled after practice
hours.
F. All spiritleaders must follow CCSD dress code for all practices.
G. All spiritleaders must attend the scheduled summer cheer camp.

V. PERFORMANCES

Performances are required. All members must be on time, in proper
uniform, and well groomed. This includes a clean, pressed and
proper-fitting uniform, appropriate make-up, neat hair, and no jewelry.

Knowledge of performance material must be complete or a suspension may
result.

A. ALL PERFORMANCES ARE REQUIRED.
B. Varsity, J.V., and Freshmen shall be prepared to perform at all
sporting events, assemblies, pep rallies, Open House, and any other
event that may arise.
C. All squad members shall be present, in uniform, and ready to cheer
30 minutes before the game/event begins and will remain until the
game/event is over unless approval by the coach has been given.
D. Spiritleaders may not sit in the stands during any part of the
game/event unless injured or suspended. In these instances,
spiritleaders must sit in an area designated by the coach and must be
in the proper uniform.
E. Gum is not allowed and there is no eating while performing.
F. If you do not attend school due to an illness, you may not attend
practice or performance.
G. Absences from performances may only be excused by contacting the
coaches prior to the performance and only if the absence is due to
illness or a family emergency.

VI. TRANSPORTATION

A. Students must provide their own transportation to all home and
designated away games/ events.
B. If there is a problem finding transportation, the coach must be
contacted PRIOR to the game/event to make necessary arrangements.

VII. UNIFORMS

A. Uniforms are only to be worn at games/ special events
B. Members shall not wear uniforms outside of school-sponsored
activities.
C. Uniforms are not to be loaned to anyone for any reason unless the
advisor gives permission.
D. Issued uniforms are each spiritleader’s responsibility.
E. Uniforms are to be clean, PRESSED, and neat at all times.
F. Uniforms are not to be permanently altered. Doing so will result in

a fine to replace it.
G. Uniforms are to be returned to the coach on the day specified by
the
coach. The uniforms are to be dry-cleaned before they are returned. If

the coach has to have the uniform cleaned or repaired, the charges will

be assessed to that squad member. The fine will then be turned in to
the school banker and that member will not be allowed to register or
graduate until the fine is paid in full.
H. Each individual squad member will purchase any camp clothes and may

keep these items.
I. One uniform will be kept by the spiritleader and must be paid for
by
the parents.

VIII. MEMBERSHIP

A. The membership of each individual squad shall consist of all duly
chosen spiritleaders.
B. Members will include 18 Varsity Spiritleaders, 10 Junior Varsity
Spiritleaders, and 8 Freshman Spiritleaders. Boys will be counted
separately.

IX. TRYOUTS

A. All interested candidates and their parents must complete the
tryout
packet.
B. Tryouts will be held each spring. The packet must be turned in to
the coaches by the announced deadline or the student will not be
allowed to try out. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. Any falsified information
on the application will automatically result in disqualification. In
addition, all zone variances must be cleared prior to the tryout date.
C. All practices for tryouts are mandatory.
D. Candidates will try out in groups and individually. Candidates will

perform a pre-taught cheer, chant, jumps, and dance routine.
E. Only current standing 8th graders may try out for the Freshmen
squad. Current standing freshmen may try out for the JV squad and
current standing sophomores and juniors may try out for the Varsity
squad.
F. CCSD dress code must be followed during tryout practices. No
jewelry
and no cheer attire of any type are allowed.
G. All candidates must adhere to the following dress code on the day
of
tryouts:
Black shorts – fingertip length
Plain white T-shirt (no tank tops)
Tennis shoes
White socks
No jewelry
Hair pulled back (if necessary); no hair accessories
H. The Varsity and JV/Freshman coaches will score the candidates.
I. Any candidate who quits or is removed from a CHS squad for
disciplinary reasons may result in not being allowed to try out for
spiritleading the following year.
J. All candidates who make the squad are considered probationary until

a 2.0 GPA is verified after the completion of the second semester.
K. Spiritleaders must be full-time students during the regular school
day except for seniors who must enroll in at least four classes. Early
graduation for seniors is not permitted.
L. Results will be posted in front of the gym on the day of tryouts as

soon as they become available.

X. DEMERITS

A. A maximum of 15 demerits are allowed from the announcement of the
new squad members until the final day of the cheer season. If a
spiritleader reaches 16 demerits, s/he will be removed from the squad.
B. Members will be required to sign off on a Demerit Removal form for
all demerits received.
C. Uniforms not up to standards - 1 demerit each
a. Unclean, unmended, or unpressed uniform.
b. Improper wearing of uniform.
c. Fingernails must be kept short and clean.
d. No jewelry or gum is allowed at any time during practice or
performances.
e. No excessive wearing of perfume, oils, or lotions. These can be
dangerous when stunting.
f. Being unprepared with equipment or accessories.
C. Attendance
a. Unexcused absence from a game or performance is 5 demerits
b. Unexcused absence from a practice is 3 demerits
D. Tardiness. NO EXCUSES!
a. 0-10 minutes = 1 demerit
b. 11-20 minutes = 2 demerits
c. 21-30 minutes = 3 demerits
d. 30+ minutes = 5 demerits
E. Personal conduct – 1 demerit will be given for, but not limited
to,
the following: swearing, quarreling, bickering, playing around, failure

to be on the court or field at all times, eating or drinking during the

game, excessive talking, leaving the line up, etc.
F. Failure to meet any of the safety rules will result in demerits or
possible suspension or removal from the squad depending on the severity

of the infraction.
G. Uncooperative behavior or attitude towards advisors and or squad
members will result in 1 demerit for each occurrence.


XI. SUSPENSION / DISMISSAL

A. The coaches shall have the authority to suspend or dismiss a member

from the squad for any of the following but not limited to:
a. Uncooperative attitude toward squad members, coaches,
administration, or any school staff.
b. Undesirable or immoral behavior.
c. Undesirable language or gestures.
d. Sloppy appearance or habits.
e. Failure to perform duties outlined in the Constitution, school
rules, NIAA regulations and/or CCSD rules.
f. Any action that in any way harms the school or other squad members.
g. Consistently poor grades or unsatisfactory citizenship grades.
h. Any Dean’s Detention, RPC, or In House, which is assigned for
inappropriate behavior on campus.
i. Stunting without a coach present.
B. A suspension will result in 5 demerits. The length of the
suspension
will be determined by the coach.
C. Outside participation on a competitive squad sponsored by
all-stars,
gyms, schools, private organizations, etc. will not be permitted.

XII. EXPENSES

Each member is expected to help earn funds to pay for such items as
uniforms, camp, and other miscellaneous expenses. Expenses could range
from $500.00 - $900.00 per member each year. Several fundraisers will
be held during the year, but ultimately, the responsibility for these
expenses is that of the member and/or her parents. Please discuss any
financial circumstances you may have with the coaches as soon as you
become aware of them.


***This Constitution may be revised each year but must be revised
before tryouts for the following school year are held.
