Every month, the Cosmopolitan has an artist-in-residence do an interactive art exhibit at P3Studio. They find artists from all over the country through the Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to commissioning and producing ambitious public art projects.

This month, local artist Brent Sommerhauser is doing a glass art exhibit, where you can design your own glass tile to add to the collection. It began Wednesday, Aug. 12 and ends Sunday, Sept. 13.

“The Cosmopolitan wants to have different kinds of interactive art available to anyone who enters their hotel,” Sommerhauser said. “The plan is to keep the glass pieces here and hopefully they will be displayed somewhere in the hotel.”

Guests who walk into P3Studio get to choose their own color piece of 3×3 glass to go with a clear glass piece. Then they get to choose whether or not they want their color piece to be crisper by putting the color piece on top of the clear one. Finally they get to choose whatever design or picture they want to put on the glass by using smaller, thinner, curved or spiked pieces of glass.

“The process of getting the glass into the final product takes about 12 hours in the kiln,” said Sommerhauser. “After they are finished, I take pictures of tiles and post them to the Instagram page we created so everyone can see the finished product.”

The Cosmopolitan is hosting three more artists this year to do other interactive art projects. This event is free to the public. The final destination of these art pieces has not yet been determined although these art pieces may eventually become a permanent part of the hotel itself. The exhibit is open Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 6 to 11 p.m.
