Showing off their skills in marketing sales, management, finance, hospitality, and entrepreneurship in business DECA members competed in the State Career Development Conference (SCDC) from Sunday, Feb. 11 through Tuesday, Feb. 13 at the Flamingo Hotel. For the first time in school history, ten Cougars will compete at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Georgia.
“I did my project on drones to transport guests to and from their hotel to the Raiders stadium to decrease the travel time and increase revenue spent in both locations,” Monet Griffin, junior, said. “I like DECA because it teaches you how to talk professionally and how to act in a business setting, also it’s good networking to meet people all across the globe.”
DECA members who will advance to ICDC along with Griffin are freshmen Bridget Podlesni and Steve Vott, Rayne Hayes, junior, and her partner Sophia Potamitis, sophomore, Anne Burton, junior, and senior Nolan Phan. These students will compete in Georgia from Saturday, April 21 through Tuesday, April 24 to go head to head against students from all around the world.
“My partner and I decided to do our project on buying and merchandising research operations. Because we were going to do a written, we had to do lots of research,” Potamitis said. “We wanted to find a new way to increase sales and advertising to improve resorts around the world.”
Students have been working on their projects since September to prepare for this competition. In the months leading up to SCDC, To assist the students, DECA adviser, Mr. Bromberg, proofread the presentations and provided time for students to present to the class so that by the day of competition, everyone was ready to propose their projects to the judges.
“I feel excited to get a chance to represent Coronado and possibly place at this event with over 18,000 kids from all around the world,” Phan said. “I’m going to prepare for Internationals by reaching out to local financial advisers to polish my event and presentation.”
