Stress is common among students especially heading into exam week. Taking time to incorporate destressing techniques into the routine, can benefit even the most anxious students.

Meditation is one of the best ways to release stress. Start by lying down in a quiet room, and switching off all electronics; relax with the eyes partially closed and turn the attention to the breathing. If the mind wanders, simply return focus back to the breath. Maintain this meditation practice for two to three minutes. A relaxed body makes for a relaxed mind.

“I enjoy meditating since it helps me completely relax and become aware of my breathing,” Monet Griffin, freshman, said.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils to enhance psychological and physical well-being. This can help improve and boost health; the best scents for stress relief are chamomile and basil. Apply two to three drops of the essential oil you choose onto the palms of the hands and take long, deep breaths.

“I like aromatherapy because it really helps me relax, and my favorite essential oil is peppermint,” Grace Johnson, sophomore, said.

Yoga poses like downward facing dog, cobra, and child’s pose will decrease tension in the body. Hold each pose for one minute to feel its effect.

“I like stretching after a long day because it relaxes my body as well as my mind,” Harrison Skinner, junior, said.

Using headphones while listening to slow, classical music such as Mozart’s Concerto in C Major will tremendously relax the mind as well as the body. This type of music can have a beneficial effect on physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones.

“My favorite way to release stress is listening to music because it helps me clear my mind and forget about my problems for a while,” Travis Smith, sophomore, said.

Taking just five minutes from a stressful day to try one of these techniques could dramatically reduce stress and improve mood.
