With summertime quickly approaching, people are doing whatever they can to achieve that bronze glow. There are many methods to achieve golden skin. Although there are some tanning techniques that people fit into their daily routines, there are others that are not as orthodox.

There are several varieties of non-FDA approved tanning pills available on the market. These pills dubbed ‘tanamins” tint the skin with color additives. Those who take the pills are advised to continue to apply sunblock as they will not protect from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

“I don’t think I would try tanning pills because they are not FDA approved which may not be safe,” Maria Demetriou, sophomore, said.

Sunless tanning lotions are a simple alternative to professional spray tans. Tanning lotion temporarily tints the top layer of skin. Like airbrush tanning, the tan will fade gradually every time you bathe.

“I use medium sunless tanning lotion because it looks very natural,” Anna Beasley, sophomore, said. “I lay out in the sun for an hour prior to applying the lotion.”

Tanning towels provide a neat and even tan. Individually wrapped towelettes contain a clear tanning formula, and a tan will develop a few hours after application.

Bronzer is a common makeup practice that many use everyday. Dusting on bronzer can produce a beautiful glow on the cheekbones. Bronzing will only provide a temporary glow, as it washes off with water.

“I wear bronzer because it is easy to apply and easy to wash off. It is the perfect non-permanent tanning solution,” Shadi Modirshahla, sophomore, said.

Natural sunshine is the most popular tanning method. Although outdoor tanning is the most natural approach, it is advised to take precaution as harmful UVA and UVB rays are emitted by the sun.

No matter the method used to achieve a suntan, it is crucial to always use sunscreen to prevent damaging effects from the sun. Sunglasses are also essential as they protect the eyes. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun in the sun this summer.
