Friday’s tend to be the day that both teachers and students are in a happy mood because the weekend is right around the corner, but Mr. Manning’s students are happy for a completely different reason.

The last Friday of each month his students take a field trip to Henderson’s local farmers’ market. There the special needs students purchase fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, nectarines, blueberries, cucumbers and other healthy foods.

“My favorite part about the farmers’ market is the vegetables,” Tateonna Hass, freshman, said.

After shopping, both students and teachers enjoy lunch from one of the stands at the market. Hot dogs, chips, and teriyaki chicken are some of the many options for lunch.

With a full stomach, everyone loads on the bus and heads back to Coronado in order to continue an eventful Friday.

Once back on campus, they carry the recently purchased produce back to the classroom. There, baskets are ready to be filled with all the fresh produce.

Each basket is equally filled with fruits and veggies. Afterwards, the special needs students hand deliver the baskets to the staff members who have pre-purchased them for $15.

“Knowing that the student’s are learning about fruits and vegetables and which ones to pick out for me based on what I like, is why I like to buy produce baskets from Mr.Manning’s class. Plus I love supporting the special ed classes in anyway that I can,” Ms.Wilson, physical education teacher, said.

A walk to the gardens located at the back of the softball fields ends fifth period. The class waters the corn, herbs, and other natural foods. They are growing their own produce to help fill up the baskets that will be for sale again next year.
