The Roar newspaper staff attended the Las Vegas Review-Journal High School Journalism Awards on Friday, May 23.  The staff entered both the newspaper category and the website category.

The Roar was ecstatic to hear the announcement of first place for the best News Website in the valley.  After only transferring to a website based newspaper in January, the staff is honored to have received the award.

“It was a great feeling because it validated everything we have done.  The website still needs some work, but we are definitely on the right track. It’s a great way to go out as Editor-in-Chief to leave a legacy at Coronado,” Shelby Thomas, senior, said.

Other awards won by the staff included second Best Newspaper in the valley, Best Feature/Art/Entertainment Page Design, Best Editorial, second best Editorial Cartoon, second Best Artwork, third Best Sports Page Design, third Best Informational Artwork, third Best Page One Design, third Best Feature Photo, and an honorable mention for Best Humorous Opinion Writing.

“I was so pleased with earning first place for the website.  We couldn’t have done it without Mr. Winn’s web-design class.  I was really happy for my staff for earning second best newspaper,” Mrs. Thompson, newspaper adviser, said.

Editor-in-Chief Rachael Mintz, senior, was also awarded Most Valuable Staffer by Mrs. Thompson for her four years of dedication to The Roar.

“I was honestly shocked that Tom picked me considering how hard both Shelby and I work. We are a team and both of us have different strengths. I actually started crying when I saw my name on the screen because I had not expected that, and it was nice to be acknowledged for my hard work,” Mintz said.

Next year’s staff will be led by Editor-in-Chief Amaya Hunsberger, junior, and Assistant Co-Editor-in-Chiefs Kacie Leach, sophomore, and Izzy Schmidt, freshman.
