Varsity Football

The Cougars celebrated a shutout win in the homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 18 against the Basic Wolves. The 41-0 victory pushes the Cougars to a 4-4 record, with two games remaining in the season.

Basic started the game in possession but could not gain traction. The Cougs scored and completed the extra point midway through the first quarter. Momentum carried the Cougars through the first half, picking up with a fumble recovery from junior Mark Skelton, leading to a touchdown. The Cougars were up 20-0 at the conclusion of the first half.

Quarterback Keegan Tharp completed five touchdown passes for five out of six scored, making for a strong passing game for the Cougars. The strong performance by the offensive line created pockets and opportunities for Tharp.

“We’ve thrown the ball pretty well all year and I hope it will continue this week,” Head Coach Biletnikoff said. “As for our offensive line, they continue to work hard every week, they’re a big reason for our success in the passing game, and I think whoever they line up against they’re going to give it their all. Our defense has kept us in every game this year and getting a shut out last night was just another example of how our defensive staff has prepared them to be successful.”

Half time included the homecoming halftime show and crowning of royalty. Seth Burdo was crowned king, and Olivia Castillo was crowned queen. The Cougars finished the game strong, scoring three additional touchdowns to shut out the Wolves 41-0. Coronado’s next game is at home on Thursday, Oct 24.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Both the men’s varsity tennis team and women’s varsity team won the 4A Desert League Regional Title. Men’s varsity tennis defeated the Clark Chargers 10-4 in the regional championship match on Thursday, Oct. 17. The women’s team defeated Clark 10-6 for their regional championship on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

“Clark was the only loss we had all season,” senior captain Sebastian Frace said. “It’s the best feeling to comeback after a couple weeks of hard work and practice and crush a team that beat you before.”

The women’s team went undefeated 12-0 in league while the men’s team had final league record of 11-1. The state playoff and championship matches will be held at Darling Tennis Center this year. Both teams play again in a state playoff match against a currently unknown opponent on Thursday, Oct. 31

Men’s varsity soccer

Men’s varsity soccer defeated Desert Oasis 5-2 in a home game on Monday, Oct. 14. The end of the first half left the Cougars tied 2-2 but after scoring three more goals in the second half the Cougars secured the win. Juniors Ryan Wilkinson and Maor Kohen led the Cougs to victory each scoring two goals against the Diamondbacks. Juniors Ryan Daniel and Taye Adams contributed with three assists and one assist respectively.

“One thing we need to work on before state is keeping focus in big games,” Adams said. “Something I need to improve in my game is stepping up as an attacking threat.”

In the second game of the week, men’s varsity soccer lost 0-2 in an away game against Bishop Gorman. After a goal against the Cougs in the first half the Gorman Gaels were able to hold onto the lead and take the win. The Cougars play again in a home game against Clark on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.

Women’s Varsity Soccer

Women’s varsity soccer defeated the Bishop Gorman Gaels in a home game on Wednesday Oct. 16. During the tough game against one of their main rivals, senior goalkeeper Taylor Book saved two goals, making it a 2-0 shut out. With goals from freshmen Xayla Black and Regan Diguilio, the Cougars secured their win.

“The win against Gorman boosted our teams confidence since they’re our biggest rival,” junior Allison Brockelman said. “We have been working all season to beat them.”

Earlier in the week, the Cougars took the win against Desert Oasis 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 14.. The team’s next game is Monday Oct. 21 at home against Spring Valley.

Women’s Varsity Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team was bested by the Bishop Gorman Gaels 0-3 in an away game on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The scores for the three sets were 20-25, 16-25 and 13-25. Senior Sara Arroyo led offensively with nine kills and two digs. Sophomore Ashli Dean helped out with seven digs and one solo block.

“While the game against Gorman wasn’t our best, it was able to reveal how truly close and supportive our team is, in that it doesn’t matter whether you’re on the bench or the court; you’re cheering and not complaining.” junior Morenkeji Ajayi said.

In the second game of the week, the women’s volleyball team defeated the Southwest Career Tech Roadrunners 3-0 in a home game on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The final scores for the three sets were 25-11, 25-4, 25-9. Freshman Angelina Sayles slammed the other team with 17 kills and six aces. This was the Cougs’ fifth home game win this season.

Varsity plays again today at 6:00 p.m. at Green Valley.
