The Science Bowl team spent Saturday, Feb. 6 at Virtual High School’s campus to compete in the 25-year anniversary of the Nevada State Science Bowl, a state-wide competition.
“I started Science Bowl because I love science, and I was already doing Varsity Quiz which is very similar,” Mr. Aberman, Science Bowl coach, said. “I get to do something beyond regular teaching with talented students.”
The team consists of seniors Cathy Choi, Noah Schneider, and Richard Scow, junior Seth Goolsby, and sophomore Tim Gutterman. The team won three matches before noon. They beat Green Valley’s A team before losing a match against Clark. They came back strong against Green Valley’s B team, but lost the final match. Their final score was five to two, which put the team in seventh place out of 32 teams.
“Our team did super great placing seventh for being such a young and inexperienced team,” Schneider said. “We beat last year’s reigning champions early on in the day and kept doing well. Science Bowl is interesting and fun, not only because you get to test your own knowledge, but you also get to see the wide range of knowledge every student and competitor has.”
The team received $300 for the Science Department. Davidson Academy from Reno won the tournament and received $1,000.
