The men’s varsity basketball team played Las Vegas High School on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and the Wildcats won with a score of 74-65.
Within the first five minutes of the game, Matt Johnson, senior, scored a three pointer. Keeping up his momentum, Johnson went on to get a rebound and score two more points.
The Cougars had many chances to shoot free throws as the Wildcats kept fouling them.
As time was ticking down in the first quarter, Andrew Palma, senior, caught a pass from half court and dribbled up for a layup with no one on him, ending the first quarter with the Cougars in the lead 18-15.
At the start of the second quarter, Nick Kornieck, senior, made a layup quickly followed by Bryce Savoy, sophomore, who made another two point shot.
After leading the first half, the Cougars ended at half time in the lead with a score of 32-30.
Beginning third quarter, Brandon Van Alfen, senior, was fouled but missed the free throw.
As the third quarter came to a close, Palma made another three point shot, ending the third quarter with the Wildcats barely in the lead with a score of 45-41.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, many team members went up to make layups but were blocked by the Wildcat’s defense.
The game ended with the Wildcats on top and a score of 74-65.
“I think that as a team we could have passed better and not played so selfishly,” Trey Hurlburt, sophomore, said.
