There are those student athletes who wait for this moment their entire high school careers: signing day. Nine varsity athletes signed to their future colleges on Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the gym.
Tatum Spangler, senior, has been verbally committed to University of Kentucky to play softball since her sophomore year, but now it’s official.
“I felt pure happiness signing the papers,” Spangler said. “It is a weight off my shoulders knowing that all the hard work and sacrifices have paid off. All the support from others made this possible.”
Seniors Jake McLean, Taylor Darden, Brennan White, Kyle Hall, and Boston Mabeus all signed to play baseball. McLean will be staying close to home at UNLV in the fall. Darden signed with Mesa Community College in Arizona. Also headed to Arizona, White will go to Scottsdale Community College. After high school, Hall and Mabeus will continue being teammates at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
“Boston and I have been friends since we were eight years old,” Hall said. “We’ve played with and against each other since then. Boston is always striving to be better, so he will be a beneficial guy to be playing with.”
Varsity golfers Samantha Penor and Gabrielle DeNunzio have won the regional and state championship titles all four years of high school and plan to continue their athletic careers in college. Penor is headed to Biola University in California, and DeNunzio plans to play Weber University in Utah.
“High school golf gave me the opportunity to really learn what team golf is all about, and I think that will help me most in college,” Penor said. “Usually golf is an individual sport, so playing for a team is totally different than just playing yourself.”
