The varsity football team overpowered the Las Vegas High School Wildcats Thursday night with a 34-13 win.
After a third and out, the Cougars punted the ball to the Wildcats in the first quarter, but it was recovered by the Cougars after being touched by the opposing team first. This led to a touchdown run by Tanner Gorski, senior, for the first score of the game. After missing the two-point conversion, the Cougars brought in six points.
The Wildcats created another turnover when they fumbled on kickoff, giving the Cougars the chance to score another touchdown by number 10, Travis Boman, junior, making the score 13-0 Cougars.
The Wildcats were in the red zone when the Cougars intercepted the ball in the endzone. Forced to punt, the Cougars again recovered their punt and Nick Trejo, senior, ran in the ball for a Cougars’ touchdown securing a 20-0 lead.
“I just work really hard in practice, be a team player, and I just trust my blockers every time,” Trejo said.
After an interception by Justin Belknap, senior, the score was 27-0 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats responded to the pressure and scored a touchdown to shrink the Cougars’ lead to 27-7. Cougars running back, Trejo, ran in a second touchdown for the team. “I wanted three, but I came close,” Trejo said.
Near the end of the game, the Wildcats scored a touchdown, but the Cougars still ran away with the 34-13 win.
Heading to Green Valley next week, the Cougars have positive feelings about the rest of the season.
“I am looking to just win out the season, no more losses, have two touchdowns a game, and try to put up 100 yards per game,” Trejo said.
