After Black History Month and Women’s History Month, America celebrates National Poetry Month. The Academy of American Poets chose April for National Poetry Month in 1996.

National Poetry Month includes numerous days that celebrate poetry and literature, including Poem in your Pocket Day.

“We’ve been celebrating National Poetry Month as a club in our meetings. By giving out poems, we’re trying to celebrate with the entire school,” vice president Tia Noll, senior, said.

The National English Honor Society (NEHS) will be distributing pocket poems all day Thursday, April 24, in honor of Poem in your Pocket Day. Members will wear their club t-shirts, which flout a hand illustration of famous literary symbols and give out poems all day. The poems will be by a variety of authors, ranging from Plath and Emerson to Coronado students and NEHS members.

“I’m hoping these poems will show kids that poetry really can be funny and interesting,” Jacob Albarian, junior, said.

The goal of both NEHS and National Poetry Month is to foster a love of poetry and supply the public with poems in innovative and fun ways. Those celebrating Poem in your Pocket Day should share their pocket poems with others they encounter throughout the day or use the hashtag #pocketpoem on Twitter.
