The women’s varsity volleyball team defeated Eldorado at home on Tuesday, Sept. 29, leading over the Sundevils 25-10, 25-7 and 25-17.

Cali Thompson, senior, led the team with an overhand scoring serve at the beginning of the game and earned aces throughout the match. Nicki Jackson, senior, secured the win for their first set by scoring the last point. Eldorado attempted to attack and block the Cougars’ spikes but were unable to defeat the ladies who won after the Sundevils made an attack error by hitting out of bounds. Coronado ended with two fouls, one of which was caused by an illegal hit, and leading 3-0.

“I felt like today there could have been a lot more intensity, but I knew the girls could focus, and we will always win,” Olivia Keller, senior, said.

The team has won all of their pre-season matches as well as their scrimmages and also won against their rivals, Shadow Ridge, at the State Championship for the third time.

“Over all of our wins this year we have been improving especially in the Durango Fall Classic, as we came together and fought many battles,” Thompson said.

The women will head to their biggest competition of the season, the Nike Tournament of Champions, this weekend in Arizona.

“I am definitely confident we will do better next time because our team has so much potential and so much skill. They know how to work hard and are diligent. I know that we can always do better,” Keller said.
