The Cougarettes hosted Coronado’s Dance for a Cure on Wednesday Jan. 20 with elementary and middle school students at the boys basketball game.

Each student who participated paid $20 and received a dance for a cure t-shirt that was worn during the dance performance. The proceeds from the event went towards breast cancer awareness.

“The school dance team has been raising awareness for breast cancer for a very long time. We do different things throughout the year to raise money including Coronado Dance for a Cure,” Meagan Castle, senior, said.

The kids who participated had the opportunity to perform with the nationally ranked Cougarette dance team in front of the basketball fans, friends, and families. They also got to learn dance techniques and got to know the school’s dance program.

The students participated in a clinic from 4:30-6:30 P.M. in the dance room and performed at halftime in the gym to Fight Song by Rachel Platten.

The Cougarettes have many events coming up in the near future. Some of these events include the NDA CCSD championship competition on Feb. 6, and the Dance Extravaganza Nationals send off on Feb. 20. The NDA Nationals also take place on Feb. 26-28.  Along with these events the dance team also has a spring showcase on May 13 in the gym at 6 P.M.

“We are getting ready for the upcoming events by practicing every day, performing at basketball games, and doing team bonding activities. We also pay attention to local dance teams to better ourselves,” Emma Bollinger, senior, said.

While the Dance for a Cure event was taking place, the men’s varsity basketball team defeated Eldorado 77-63, and the women’s varsity team won 60-43.
