Men’s varsity basketball defeats Basic

The men’s varsity basketball team battled against Basic on Monday, Feb. 1.  The game ended with a victory for the Cougars with a score of 92-56.  

“I was pretty confident going into the game. I knew we were better than Basic,” Patrick Simms, sophomore, said.  

Right from the start, the Cougs were in the lead. During the first quarter, juniors Kennedy Koehler, Bryce Savoy, and senior Jake DesJardins made the majority of the baskets. At the end of the quarter, Koehler prevented the opponent from gaining, then drove for the basket, but did not score again before the quarter ended.  After the first quarter the Cougars led 25-13.

“We work really hard during practice, and the hard work really pays off. We were in the lead the whole game and knew we were going to win,”  Steven Martinez, senior, said.  

Second quarter was steady as the Cougars continued to gain on Basic 46-24. During the second half of the game, many of the points scored were from the free throw- line.  Near the end of the third quarter, Martinez scored a two pointer, making the game 65-38.  Basic ran the ball, and scored ending the quarter 65-40.  

At the end of the fourth quarter,Simms dunked the ball right before the buzzer, winning the game 92-56.

“We have been practicing really hard and are really stoked for the next game against Eldorado,” Simms said.

The men’s basketball team heads into their next away game on Wednesday, Jan. 3 against Eldorado, and their next home game will be on Thursday, Feb.11 against Rancho.
