With the game neck-and-neck until the final inning, the varsity softball team lost to Foothill, 6-5 at home on Monday, April 25.

At the top of the first inning a Foothill batter hit an RBI bringing in two runs. Coronado brought in two runs at bat to tie up the score two all to conclude the first inning.

“When walking onto the field the thoughts that ran through my mind were just do my best, and it will all work out some way or another. I focus on the trust that I have behind my team. They will pick me up in the good and bad times. I also try to be confident and trust my mechanics that I have worked hard on,” Tatum Spangler, sophomore, said.

The Falcons did not earn any runs in the second inning. Juniors Marissa Kopp and Dylan Underwood both scored a run each to put Coronado in the lead 4-2.

With an uneventful third inning, Foothill caught up and made two runs in the fourth inning. Coronado fought strong, ending the inning tied five all after Taylor Okamura, junior, scored a run.

“The key to a successful game is good team chemistry. If I know my teammates have my back I’m more likely to take risks, and trust they’ll be there to pick me up,” Okamura said.

The Falcons triumphed 6-5, after earning a run at the top of the seventh.

“To get a win, it’s important that everyone is on the same page mentally. Softball is said to be 70% mental; if you aren’t mentally more into the game or prepared than the other team, losing becomes inevitable,” Underwood said.
