The Cougars shut out the Eldorado Sundevils 10-0 in the varsity baseball team’s last home game on Tuesday, May 3.

The game got off to a slow start as neither team scored in the first inning.

The plays heated up during the second inning with the Sundevils hitting more aggressively. Eldorado hit two pop flies and went down one, two, three.

In the bottom of the second, Jeffrey Ewing, sophomore, hit a double bringing in two runs along with his one. Shortly after, Anthony Carro, junior, sent the ball flying into the outfield to put him on first base while the Sundevils chased the play. Corben Bellamy, senior, and Carro each earned a run. After the second inning, the score was 6-0 Cougars.

“We came in today knowing it’s our last home game, so I wanted to play as hard as I could. I have been playing on the field since eighth grade, and I’ve come a long way. I wanted my team to know that I love this sport, and I’m grateful that I got to play and become closer with this group,” Bellamy said.

In the third inning, Eldorado’s first batter struck out, but the next batter walked. Fortunately, the Cougars caught all the balls Eldorado hit so they could not advance to home base.

“My team did really great this year. We played collectively, and we could very well make it to state. I’m excited to see where we go,” Ewing said.

In the fourth inning, Cougars added three runs to the score. They walked twice to first base and Garett Lake, junior, made it home, making the score 7-0. Noah Hemphill, junior, and Kyle Hall, sophomore, both got singles. Both ran home when Landon Rowland, junior, hit another single. The score at the end of the fourth inning was 9-0.

The Sundevils made one last effort to put some runs on the scoreboard but were dominated by the Cougar’s defense. Coronado was so far ahead the ump called a mercy ruling in the fifth inning ending the game.

The Cougars will play next on Thursday, May 5 against Rancho. Coronado will advance to playoffs beginning Tuesday, May 10.

“I am very proud of my team. They have worked so hard and as the season has gone on we have gotten better and better. Our team is a young team, we only have two seniors, so hopefully after playoffs we can advance to regionals and move to state,” Coach Santigate said.
