In a grueling fight for the state title, men’s varsity soccer (18-4-1) lost to Reno team Galena (2-0-0) 2-1 after battling it out in overtime on Saturday, Nov. 12.

They took down Durango (20-5-2) with a  3-2 win on Friday, Nov. 11, advancing them to the state finals.

“We played good as a team. We stuck through the game and played hard as a team and a family from start to end. There wasn’t one moment where we gave up, our heads were held high through the game, it was just unlucky in the end,” Harrison Mirolla, junior, said.

Control of the game went back and forth as both teams had solid plays.

During the first half, Alfredo Diaz, sophomore, scored with the assist of John Lynam, junior, and goalkeeper Harrison Skinner, senior, defended his team with eight saves. It still wasn’t enough for them to claim the title after an intense overtime.

“We didn’t play as well as I think we were capable of,  and even though it wasn’t the outcome we wanted, it was a great season,  and I’m proud to say we made it that far,” Max Abe, junior, said.

At the semi-finals on Friday, the women’s varsity soccer team (19-3-4) lost 5-0 against Arbor View (20-1-2). Throughout the game, goalkeeper Rachel Morris, senior, defended her team with six saves.

“I think we put in a great amount of effort and prepared for the game well, and even though the outcome of the game was not what we wanted, it was a great season and had a lot of fun with my team,” Taylor Boren, junior, said.
