It was a night dedicated to the fight against breast cancer, and although Green Valley defeated Coronado 10-28 at home on Oct. 16, the Cougars took that theme to heart and fought back against a strong Gator defense.

The game began on a high note when quarterback, Landon Rowland (13), junior, had pink-attired Cougars cheering in the stands after running the ball in for a touchdown giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead.

“The kick off was the best part of the game because everyone was so spirited. It was great having Cougar Nation come out to support breast cancer awareness,” Rickell Jenkins, senior, said.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Green Valley’s AJ Amelburu (12), passed the ball to Marquez Powell (1) who ran it in to tie the game 7-7. Isaiah Malcin (10) scored a touchdown to steal the lead making it 14-7. Coronado’s kicker, Gavin Wale (14), freshman, made a 32-yard field goal. The Cougars took to the locker room down by 4.

During halftime, Cougar Spirit and Cougarettes performed their Cheer-for-a-Cure dance to show their support of the effort to spread awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

In the second half of the game, the Gators scored two touchdowns to take the win 28-10.

“We worked really hard these last two weeks. It also didn’t help having a lot of injuries. It was a hard loss, but we will move on as we prepare for Eldorado,” Jackson Strong (42), sophomore, said.
