On Monday, February 6th, the Varsity Women’s Basketball team went head to head with Shadow Ridge High School in which they won with a final score of 60-52.

“It was a little stressful at first, but I feel that our energy picked up and we came out on top,” senior Imani Bieniemy said.

The game started off strong with Coronado earning the first basket. The first half was quite a close game, with each team scoring back to back. However, Coronado pulled through and took the lead, ending the half with a score of 33-30. The second half was where Coronado took the game, with the girls making baskets every other second, and finally taking the game with an 8 point lead and a score of 60-52.

“We supported each other really well on and off the court. As a team, we came together and won in the end,” Bieniemy said.

This game was truly exhilarating to watch. The Coronado girls played the game with their amazing teamwork, and pulled through. Make sure to catch the Varsity Women’s Basketball team’s next game where they will go head to head with Green Valley High School at Green Valley on Wednesday, February 8th at 6:30 pm.

Men’s Varsity Basketball

On Tuesday, February 7, the Coronado Men’s basketball team won their most recent home game competing against Clark High School. With a score of 75-59, this most recent win puts their current record at 15-9.

The game started off well for Coronado, easily keeping every spectator on their feet. The Cougars gained an early lead in the first quarter, propelling them eagerly into the fierce fight with Clark they were heading into. Unfortunately, the lead didn’t last long, with Clark leading into the second quarter, but it set a precedent for how the rest of the game would go.

“I got more minutes than I have all season, so that was good for me. I’m more of just a hustle guy for the team, and when everyone plays their roles, it goes well for us,” junior Grant Sondrup said. “I need to improve on the offensive end, and to get stronger to get a little bit bigger to compete at the next level.”

While they initially lost their lead and ended the second quarter several points down, the team fought hard and made their comeback in the second half of the game. After gaining back their points to pull ahead, the Cougars sailed through the third and fourth quarters, maintaining that lead until the end.

“As a team, I think our ball movement struggles sometimes, when we get down, when the team morale goes down a little bit and everyone wants to be that guy who’s going to save the game, but it’s always a team effort and it’s hard to beat us,” Sondrup said.

With a final score of 75-59, the Coronado Men’s basketball team is ready to take on their next challengers. They will play next in an away game against Durango High School this Thursday, February 9 at 6:30. Be sure to support your fellow Cougars!
